I downloaded this when it was free, but only got around to reading it recently. I am glad I didn't spend $4.00 on this book. I have read a ton of books lately and Heartbreak Highway stands out as one of the worst. Poor writing and a plot that never really seemed to go anywhere. I did not like the character of Emma at all. She was weak and, for lack of a better word, stupid. I think the author was trying to portray her a naive, but even if I had bought into that, there still were not enough redeeming qualities for me to root for this character. I think this book is supposed to be a romance, but the characters never really interacted enough to fall in love. It was more like they see each other a couple of times and we are guided to believe they fall in love. Very little dialogue and one rape scene later, and they are suddenly star-crossed lovers torn apart. Never mind that each believed the absolute worst about the other. Suddenly we are given a lack luster conclusion, with a neat little bow that feels completely rushed. I kept waiting for the climax. This book just sort of faded out. The ending was there before I felt the story even began.Product details

This is being advertised as a story of heartfelt forgiveness and unrequitted love. The main character, Emma, gets raped by her childhood crush and gets upset only that he never calls afterwards. She tells herself that she was to blame for being so lustful, and leaves town after her grandmother passes away. Her crush, Dean, feels bad about raping her and apparently tries to track her down for 8 years to apologize. Fast forward 8 years, they meet again by accident and she has had his child. After a few nights, they finally have a little talk and she tells him I wasn't mad you raped me, I was mad that I thought you didn't love me. Let's get married. AWFUL.
Fair romance very much predictable. The caracters are clean cut black and white and the storyline with more or less foreseeable obstacles that must be won over. Written in easy and deft style and never boring. Easy to forget, nevertheless.
I really enjoyed this book, I couldn't put it down once I started reading it.Loved the change of environments, good love story with hurt & forgiveness.
This story of Emma and Dean is very predictable and boring. I read 3/4 of the book and felt like reading anymore was a waste of my time. I hate to gripe about free books but.......... It just wasn't very good at all. I am only giving it 2 stars because it was free.
I highly dislike reading rape stories. It is not an extremely graphic, or violent rape, but it is rape regardless. Sorry, but she told him "No" numerous times, and he what? Lost control, didn't hear her, etc. All the excuses that rapists use.
And later when she says "What you did wasn't that bad"?
Pathetic.
Avoid. Definitely do not pay for this book. The writing is sub-par. Story has nothing new to offer by way of likeable characters, new plot theme/ideas, or even interesting old ideas.
This was a great read, couldn't put it down. Great to read books that are set in Australia.
This was a great book. And especially set in Australia. I know all the places mentioned in the book and it made you feel as if you were there. Loved the characters, bad boy turned good, and the happily ever after. But it took quite a while to get there. Recommended.
