Christmas for Joshua A Jewish Family an Interfaith Marriage and a Christmas Controversy eBook Avraham Azrieli

Have you ever had a true test of your religion? Your faith? For anyone who is Jewish, Orthodox Jewish or of Christian religion this book is the perfect eyeopener for you. The story is of Rusty, a Jewish heart surgeon originally from NY now transplated to Arizona, and the missteps that happen after finding out his daughter is going to marry an Orthodox Jewish boy in NY. Rusty automatically worries for his daughter and the severity of the religion. Rusty, once named Christian, converted to the Jewish religion for his wife Rebecca in his early 20's. Fast forward many years later, their only daughter is now in college and Rusty is the president of their local synagogue, donating his not so free time for, well, free. After finding out that Debra, his daughter, is going to marry Mordechai in a few months time, right around the Christmas holiday, Rebecca and Rusty plan to travel to NY.

Here is where the twists and turns of the novel start. Rusty suffers untold pain while in Manhattan at the hands of Mordechai's parents and rabbi because he is a shaygetz, a half Christian Jewish boy, or not full Jew. He isn't even allowed to participate in Debra's wedding. For this man, who has given up all relics of his previous life religion for the Jewish culture this is the final straw. Almost like a full on midlife crisis, he experiences a religious crisis that pushes the limits of all that surrounds him: family, friends and synagogue.

This novel is a beautifully written, heartfelt novel, perfect for anyone with Jewish background. There are many terms, sentences, and words that correlate with the Jewish faith. The author, Avraham Azrieli, also includes many facets of the Christian faith and as most know the two don't usually go hand in hand. Keep in mind you don't have to follow either religion to read the book, but you should know of the strong theme that is throughtout the book, and is in fact the basis of the story.

Christmas for Joshua A Jewish Family an Interfaith Marriage and a Christmas Controversy eBook Avraham Azrieli Reviews

It caught my attention because my grand son's name is Joshua. It was a great story with perspective on a converted Jew who thought he understood his place in the world and found out he still was searching for answers. It also is a rather accurate portrayal of how people in a religious community can turn on those who are members of their ritual families. This does happen from time to time and it is sad that those who offer to do so much, may often be the first to be dismissed if their views change from those of the mainstream community. A great read, easy for non Jews to understand , and a thoughtful book in this day of global inclusion.
This book is about a beautiful Jewish family. The husband converted to Judiasm and the wife changed from Orthodox to Reformed. All is going well with their affluent lifestyle - he's president of the synagogue & well respected. Then their daughter falls in love with an Orthodox Jew, sending the father into a tailspin. The father shows immaturity in dealing with the daughter's wedding and life, even thought he's a renowned cardiac surgeon, used to dealing with emergencies.

The author lacks knowledge of Catholicism and Christian values.
This Azrieli book, like the other two I read, kept me awake all night. I am aware that the next Azrieli will also be a sleep thief. BY NOW HE HAS BECOME ONE OF LAST YEARS MOST TALENTED WRITERS !

This time it's not an historical thriller, and deals instead with the uglynnes of religious intolerance .

The hero, Dr. Christian Dinwall, is put by the fanaticism in an impossible situation; and he reacts to it with such naivete and even stupidity that leads the reader to wonder. Did he realy believe that the abysm separating Christians from Jews, Orthodox Jews from Reformed Jews, can be crossed in one dramatic night?

I enjoyed the irony of a Moslem who sells a Christmas tree to a Jew.

The book puts the readers in front of a magnifying glass. The clash between Dr. Dinwall rational thinking and the blind believers is shown to us in all its thousand colors.

We realize that nothing is changed, the "civilized" world hasn't learned a thing in two thousand years and even can be lead to perform a second Holocaust.

That said, the book ends in so a lovely and surprising way that lets us believe there is a a little light at the end of the dark tunnel.
Beginning of this book was terrific, really sympathized with Joshua and rooted for him to regain his family, his honor and love from all concerned. Unfortunately, this was the high point, when Joshua was forbidden to attend his daughter's nuptials because his conversion was attended by a female Reform rabbi. The questions and sympathies which arise from these awful events left me gasping in amazement that such heavy-handed, awful acts could be committed by a religious person. What would Joshua do? What would his family expect him to do? The next part of the book is a definite "cop-out", in that the author has Joshua and his wife escape to Doctors Without Borders, thereby not making a substantive choice in the overriding question…to re-convert under Orthodox rules, endearing him to his orthodox daughter and new son-in-law or? Colnclusion was awful, not really giving a satisfactory answer to this provocative situation, just running away from it!!!
